THE HORTON STORY
Today my world is so completely involved with the towing and recovery industry that it's hard to remember a time when it wasn't! At the age of 18, I started out driving trucks, and for a few years here in Virginia and for 3 years out west in Phoenix, I drove dumps, tankers and all sorts of trucks. During a family visit back to Virginia from Phoenix I was offered a job driving a tow truck for one of the great Virginia towing legends, Henry Heath, and I promised Henry I'd give it 6 months. At the end of that time I'd made up my mind and even bought my plane ticket back to Phoenix when I went bowling one night, 24 hours before my flight back out west. That night I met Tonya, my wife of 29 years, tore up that plane ticket, and to the relief of both our families we're here in Virginia for good. After Tonya and I were married, I continued to drive for Eastern Petroleum and then Amoco, and then I decided to put my towing experience to work selling first AATAC and then Dynamic and later Jerr-dan equipment. While I was on the road selling, and Tonya continued her work for a federal credit union, we started a parts and accessories business out of the house which in spite of our busy schedules grew steadily. I've always been a strong supporter of associations, and the committees I've served on for T.R.A.A., TRPM, VATRO and others have given much more back to me than I have given to them. The valuable friendships and depth of experience that my involvement with associations has brought to my work has more than convinced me of the importance of teamwork, and that carries over to the people here at Horton Truck & Equipment. |
